The President of the Republic addressed a message of condolences to the Family of artist Júlio Resende.
Following is the text of the message of condolences of President Anibal Cavaco Silva:
“On behalf of the People of Portugal and in my wife’s and my own personal names, I want to address our deepest condolences to the Family of Júlio Resende, a grand Master of Portuguese Art in the last century.
Julio Resende dedicated his life to painting and very distinctly marked the Portuguese artistic panorama. His works are disseminated over the main collections of national and international art, but are equally expressed in the day-to-day lives of the Portuguese through relevant public works of art, of which some main instances are the ceramic tile panel “Ribeira Negra”, in Porto, or the Zoo Underground Station, in Lisbon.
Since Júlio Resende was also a teacher he had the opportunity of branding the numerous generations of students he taught. And since he wanted his work to be universal, he created in 1993 the “The Lodge of Design”, a foundation to which he bequeathed his estate, collected throughout more than 30 years, in order that it be available to all who wished to become acquainted with his work.
In this hour of mourning it is with the greatest of sorrows that I render tribute to Júlio Resende, knowing well that his passing away will be a great loss to Portuguese Art and Culture.
Aníbal Cavaco Silva”
