Raising the National Standard
At the beginning of the Commemorations of the National Day of Portugal, Camões and the Portuguese Communities, which is being celebrated this year in Elvas, the President of the Republic was received in a ceremonial welcoming session held in the Municipal Cine-Theatre of this Alentejo city.
After a greetings speech by the Mayor, José Rondão de Almeida, an address was delivered by President Cavaco Silva.
Prior to this, in Republic Square, the President had been greeted by Military Honours rendered by cadets from the Naval School and attended the raising of the National Standard.
Later, in the City Hall, the President unveiled a plaque allusive to this visit to Elvas and, in the Ceremonial Hall, signed the City Council’s Book of Honour.
After this, the President visited the city’s Castle, where he unveiled a plaque recording the inclusion of the city of Elvas in UNESCO’s Human Heritage list. Inside the Castle, he viewed the work carried out by the county’s students concerning the celebration of the National Day of Portugal.
