The President of the Republic visited Air Force Base No. 1, presided at the Military Ceremony and awarded this Unit the Honorary Membership of the Military Order of the Tower and Sword, of Valour, Loyalty and Merit.
The visit also included, amongst other individualities, the Mayor of Sintra, the Chief of the Armed Forces General Staff, the Secretary of State for National Defence and Naval Issues, the Chiefs of General Staff of the Air Force and of the Army and the Deputy Chief of Naval General Staff, as well as Mr. João Rebelo, a Member of the Parliamentary Defence Committee.
With this visit the President of the Republic wished to make public the relevant services rendered to the Country by the Air Force, in general, and particularly by Air Force Base No. 1, to the benefit of National Security and Defence.
At the same time, the President of the Republic also intended to pay tribute to all those members of the Air Force who, since its inception and until now, including the period of the African wars, sacrificed their lives and gave their best in the service of the Fatherland.
When awarding Air Force Base No. 1 with the highest State decoration, the President of the Republic interprets the Nation’s public recognition for the relevant services it has rendered the Country, renewing its trust in those that, in its service, continue working and contributing with their endeavour and dedication towards the building of modern and efficient Armed Forces, encouraging them to selflessly face the challenges of the future.
