Statement of the President
The President of the Republic condemned, whilst in León, Spain, the attempt on the Timorese President, José Ramos Horta.
In a statement to the media in that Spanish city, President Cavaco Silva said:
“During the night I received very sad and worrying news from East Timor.
I very strongly condemn the attack on President Ramos Horta. It is an attempt on the democratic institutions of the young Timorese state.
According to the news received from our Ambassador in Dili, President Ramos Horta is under treatment in hospital but free of danger.
I wish President Ramos Horta a fast recovery and that he may return, as early as possible, to the midst of his people.”
