Toasting the European Union-African partnership
The President of the Republic hosted, in the Palace of Ajuda, an official banquet in honour of the Delegations taking part in the European Union-African Summit.
The Heads of State and of Government of the European and African countries attending the Summit presented their greetings to President Aníbal Cavaco Silva, who addressed a toast to all those present, in the following terms:
"Honourable Heads of State and of Government, Honourable Delegates,
I wish to thank you all for attending this dinner.
The European Union celebrates, this year, its 50th anniversary. Africa, celebrates 50 years of the commencement of the processes for independence.
This is the most auspicious moment for the building of a new partnership, based on the values of freedom, democracy, equality, solidarity, Rule of Law and respect for human rights.
A partnership looking towards the challenges of the future.
Portugal has always fought for the strengthening of our relations and for this we are very pleased to welcome the II EU-African Summit in Lisbon.
I ask you all to join me in a toast to the success of this Summit and to the strengthening of the relations between the European Union and Africa. "
