The President of the Republic presided at the commemorative ceremonies of the Day of the Odivelas Institute, on the occasion of the 110th anniversary of its foundation.

The Head of State was accompanied by Mrs. Cavaco Silva, by the Minister for National Defence, by the Mayor of Odivelas and by the Chief of the Army General Staff.

During the event the President of the Republic met with the Officers, the Teaching Staff and with pupils of the Institute. He laid a wreath on the tomb of King D. Dinis and viewed an exhibition of Nativity Scenes made by pupils of the Institution.

The President of the Republic underlined that the Odivelas Institute has known how to serve Portugal during its many years of existence, through training the young people who are admitted there, based upon solid moral and ethical values and practising high quality learning.

The visit covered mainly the field of knowledge, emphasizing the relevance of education and training of youth and particularly the culture of significant values. The President of the Republic stated that people are the Country’s main resource and that investing in youth is the best guarantee for a future of success.

The President of the Republic equally called attention to the fact that the Odivelas Institute is an institution which enjoys very high credibility, which is in the interest of Portugal to cherish and encourage, and from which women arose who rendered the Country many relevant services in various areas of culture, arts and science, hoping that it continues to preserve and honour its history, its tradition and its principles.
