State Visit to Poland - September 1-4, 2008

The President of the Republic and Mrs. Cavaco Silva initiated on 1 September a three day State Visit to Poland, on a journey to countries included in the recent enlargement of the European Union to the East, which will also include a visit to the Slovak Republic.

In this visit, at the invitation of the Polish Head of State, Lech Kaczynski, the President of the Republic was accompanied by the Minister of State and Foreign Affairs, by the Minister for Culture and the Secretaries of State for European Affairs and for Industry and Innovation, as well as representatives of the political parties represented in Parliament.

More than 50 entrepreneurs of various sectors of activity were included in the retinue of the President of the Republic, who aims during this visit to promote new opportunities for investment and the setting up of partnerships between both countries, which may equally provide access to other European markets.

Presidents Aníbal Cavaco Silva and Lech Kaczynski will attend the closing ceremony of a seminar dealing with the economic and entrepreneurial relations between Portugal and Poland, as well as the official opening of the “Portugal – Global Technology” exhibition, which will show the new Technologies developed by Portuguese enterprises and research centres, and remain open to the public for a short period.

A Diplomatic Seminar organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which will comprise the Portuguese ambassadors in Eastern Europe, will also take place in the Polish capital, during which the Head of State will deliver a speech.

In Warsaw the President of the Republic will hold a meeting with the Polish Prime Minister, Donald Tusk, will be received in Parliament and in the Senate, grant an audience to the leader of the main opposition party and receive the former Polish President Lech Walesa.

In the Polish capital the President of the Republic will also visit the Museum of Insurrection, pay tribute to the heroes of the Warsaw Ghetto and go on to visit the Ruy Barbosa Secondary School, where he will meet Polish students coursing the Portuguese language, and host a concert featuring the Portuguese songstress Mariza, in honour of his counterpart.

The visit to Poland will end in Krakow, where President Cavaco Silva will be welcomed in the local University, which will inaugurate the “Vergílio Ferreira” Chair in Portuguese Language, and visit the city’s Cathedral, where he will meet Cardinal Archbishop Stanislaw Dziwisz.
