“From Silence and Other Islands”

Writers, actors and songsters celebrated the World Poetry Day in the Palace of Belém

In the event launched with the theme “From Silence and Other Islands”, in a tribute to poet Ruy Belo, writers actors and songsters performed on the stage set up in the Palace of Belém, celebrating the World Poetry Day, in a programme organized by Mrs. Cavaco Silva.

The Café-Poetry event that took place in the Hall of Fountains, attended by the President of the Republic, the Prime Minister’s wife, Mrs. Passos Coelho, and the Secretary of State for Culture, Dr. Francisco José Viegas, included spontaneous recitals from several guests, who read their own writings or those from other authors.

In this World Poetry Day event, the cast included writers Inês Pedrosa, Maria Teresa Belo and Tiago Patrício, actors Carmen Dolores, Lurdes Norberto, Maria João Luís, Ricardo Carriço and Romana Preto, songsters Elisa Rodrigues, Joana Pessoa, Marco Rodrigues, Mísia and Raquel Tavares as well as musicians Carlos Azevedo and Júlio Reseda (piano), Edu Miranda and Ângelo Freire (guitar).

Laurinda Alves was in charge of presentation and the performances of all writers, actors and songsters were free of any charges.

A compact disc was launched on this occasion, with 17 tracks, recorded at the 2011 Café-Poetry event held in the Palace of Belém, the profits from which will revert entirely to the “Quality of Living Action” promoted by the “Salvador” Association.

A cheque was also delivered with the proceeds of the sale of the CDs recorded in the 2010 poetry event, which was awarded to the social solidarity institution São Pedro de Claver Missionary Sisters.
