Visit to Portalegre with Infanta D. Pillar de Borbón

Mrs. Cavaco Silva visited Portalegre accompanying Infanta D. Pilar de Borbón, on the occasion of the ceremony allusive to the Europa Nostra Prize, awarded to the Museum of the Presidency of the Republic.

The ceremony was staged in the City Hall, where Infanta D. Pilar, President of the Europa Nostra Federation, signed the diploma granting the Prize, which was handed to the Curator of the Museum of the Presidency, Diogo Gaspar. The ceremony ended with the performance of a tenor, accompanied on the piano.

Later, the exhibition “From the Palace of Belém”, based upon the project with the same name which was distinguished with the European prize, was officially opened in the São Bernardo Monastery.

Mrs. Cavaco Silva and the King of Spain’s sister later visited the Church of the Convent of São Francisco, and were welcomed at the entrance by a performance of student orchestras and choirs.

In the temple, now restored and no further dedicated to the cult, the Mayor, José Mata Cáceres, hosted a dinner in the honour of the visitors, at the beginning of which both the Mayor and Mrs. Cavaco Silva delivered speeches with regard to this visit. Closing the dinner, an actor made a reading of the poem “Chant of Portalegre”, by José Régio.
