The President of the Chinese People’s Republic, Hu Jintao, and his Wife, Liu Yongqing, will hold a State Visit to Portugal from 10 to 11 July, at the invitation of the President of the Republic.
The President of the Republic and Mrs. Cavaco Silva were the guests of honour at a dinner hosted by the Mayor of Guimarães, held in Penha Park.
Exhibition in the Ducal Palace
After laying a wreath of flowers next to the statue of King D. Afonso Henriques, erected on the grounds of the Palace of the Dukes of Bragança, the President of the Republic officially opened the Exhibition “Presidents of the Republic”. Later, in the Passos Perdidos Hall, he attended the launching ceremony of a commemorative stamp of the 900th anniversary of the birth of the first King of Portugal.
The President of the Republic presided at the Commemorative Ceremony of the 9i00th Anniversary of the birth of King D. Afonso Henriques, where he delivered a speech.
Audiences in Belém
With the purpose to set the date for the coming Parliamentary elections, the President of the Republic received, in successive audiences, the political parties represented in Parliament: Socialist Party, Social Democrat Party, Central Social Democrat/People’s Party, Portuguese Communist Party, Left Wing Block and “The Greens” Environmental.
Ceremony in Heriot-Watt University
The President of the Republic was awarded the Honorary Degree in Doctor of Letters by Heriot-Watt University, at a ceremony held in what in the past was the Edinburgh School of Fine Arts, in Scotland.
Meeting in 10, Downing Street
The President of the Republic held a meeting with the British Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, on a stopover on his way to Edinburgh, in Scotland, where he will be awarded an Honorary Master’s Degree by the Heriot-Watt University.
The President of the Republic will travel to Edinburgh, in Scotland, on 23 June, to receive the Master’s Honorary Degree which will be awarded by Heriot-Watt University. Heriot-Watt University, one of the most renowned higher education institutions in the United Kingdom, originates from the Edinburgh Fine Arts School, founded in 1821.
