The President of the Republic addressed a message of condolences to the Family of Dr. António Marques Mendes.
Following is the text of the message from President Cavaco Silva;
“Upon being advised of the passing away of Dr. António Marques Mendes, I address the bereaved Family my deepest condolences.
Since the early days of the Portuguese democratic regime, António Marques Mendes stood out for his devotion to the values of freedom and democracy and by the greatness, dignity and dedication to the public cause whilst exercising the duties of Member of Parliament, alderman and Member of the European Parliament.
In carrying out these offices, for which he was freely chosen by his fellow citizens, António Marques Mendes showed an admirable patriotic spirit, distinguishing Portuguese politics by his discretion, competence and love for his Country.
