President sent condolences to the Family of Prof. José da Silva Lopes

The President of the Republic addressed a message of condolences to the Family of Prof. José da Silva Lopes.

Following is the text of the message from President Cavaco Silva:

“Upon being advised of the passing away of Professor José da Silva Lopes, I address the bereaved Family my deepest condolences.

An exceptional economist, José da Silva Lopes was a top reference in Portuguese economic thought.

Showing an extraordinary sense of dedication to the public cause, José da Silva Lopes was called upon to exercise demanding duties, and had a determining role in the deepening of Portugal’s links with international economic cooperation institutions and, later, in the process of our joining the European Communities.

He also held, in highly complex times, relevant positions such as Governor of the Bank of Portugal and Minister of Finance and Planning, showing unusual knowledge of the Country’s economic problems and deep affection for his homeland.

With the death of José da Silva Lopes, Portugal loses one the most respected, creditable and knowledgeable voices in economic issues, who always distinguished himself by his independence and strictness.

Aníbal Cavaco Silva”
