President Cavaco Silva sent condolences upon the death of Nelson Mandela

The President of the Republic addressed a message of condolences to his South African counterpart, Jacob Zuma, upon the passing Away of former President and Nobel Peace Prize Nelson Mandela.

Following is the text of the message of condolences sent by President Cavaco Silva:

“Mister President,

I was deeply saddened when learning the news of the passing away of Nelson Mandela, a major figure in South Africa and in World History. I want, on behalf of the People of Portugal and in my own personal name, to address Your Excellency, to the People of South Africa and to the bereaved Family, our very deepest regrets.

Nelson Mandela bequeaths an extraordinary legacy of universality that will last for many generations. His example of political courage, his moral stature and the trust he placed on the capability of reconciliation are true lessons of humanism.

Nelson Mandela’s dedication to the values of democracy, freedom and equality – in his own words, “an ideal for which I expect to live and that I hope to reach, but, if necessary, an ideal for which I am prepared to die” – filled the hearts of all who admired him, both in South Africa and in any other location, instilling hope, even in the face of the most exacting challenges.

The award of the Nobel Peace Prize to Nelson Mandela and his massive election to the paramount position of President of South Africa are symbols of the merited recognition of a cause defending politician and a victory for worldwide Human Rights.

In this difficult moment, the Portuguese join all those who recall, with respect and admiration, the figure of Nelson Mandela.

Aníbal Cavaco Silva”
