President of the Republic sent message to Pope Benedict XVI after his announcement of resigning to the Pontificate

The President of the Republic addressed a message to His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI, following the announcement of his resignation.

Following is the text of the message from President Cavaco Silva:

“Holy Father

It was with deep dismay that I learned that Your Holiness had announced Your resignation to the Supreme Pontificate.

On this occasion, I wish to underline the deep admiration of the Portuguese People towards Your Holiness and a magisterium which is an example of faith and hope, in the defense of the universal values of tolerance and peace.

I fondly recall the Visit of Your Holiness to Portugal in May 2010, and Your many expressions of affection and care towards the People of Portugal.

I wish to reiterate the deep appreciation of the People of Portugal for Your Holiness’ unique personality and inspiring wisdom.

Aníbal Cavaco Silva”
