The President of the Republic addressed a message of condolences to the Family of Major General Jaime Neves.
Following is the text of the message sent by President Cavaco Silva:
“Upon being advised of the passing away of Major General Jaime Neves, I address the bereaved Family my heartfelt condolences.
Throughout a brilliant military career, Jaime Neves embodied the strongest and most permanent values that are the features of our Armed Forces: unconditional love for their Country, dauntlessness in complying with their missions, daring intelligence in operational planning and in guidance of the men under his command.
Portugal is greatly in his debt. Endowed with extraordinary courage, he fought for freedom in two historical decisive occasions: in 1974, in the fall of the authoritarian regime; and later, when on 25 November 1975 it was necessary to check the advance of those who, by armed force, intended to betray the ideals of the democratic revolution.
Men such as Jaime Neves are a rare occurrence. I hope that all the Portuguese, when evoking the memory of this great figure of our Commandos, find in the midst of their existence an inspiring example of dedication to the Country.
