President Cavaco Silva sent condolences to the President of the Republic of East Timor upon the passing away of Francisco Xavier do Amaral

The President of the Republic addressed a message of condolences to the President of the Republic of East Timor, José Ramos Horta, upon the passing away of Francisco Xavier do Amaral.

Following is the text of the message of condolences from President Anibal Cavaco Silva:

“Mister President,

It was with deep sorrow that I learnt of the passing away of Francisco Xavier do Amaral, a renowned figure in the History of his country, and who bequeaths us an extraordinary legacy of courage in the fight for independence, for freedom and for the consolidation of the democratic Rule of Law in East Timor.

The dedication of Francisco Xavier do Amaral to the cause and to the people of East Timor shall forever remain as an example and as a source of inspiration for the future.

In this hour of mourning, I want to address Your Excellency and to all the People of East Timor, very particularly to the bereaved family, on behalf of the People of Portugal and in my own personal name, our most sincere condolences.

Anibal Cavaco Silva”
