The President of the Republic addressed a message of condolences to the Family of Dr. José Gonçalves Sapinho.

Following is the text of the message addressed by President Aníbal Cavaco Silva:

“Upon being told of the passing away of Dr. José Gonçalves Sapinho, I address the bereaved Family my deepest condolences.

José Gonçalves Sapinho distinguished himself with an active participation in public life. He was a Member of Parliament when this was elected to enact the Constitution and later again when it took up legislative duties. He was the founder of the National Parish Association and Mayor of Alcobaça. Those who were acquainted with him were able to witness his dedication to the local community, and as a professor and Director of the Benedita External Cooperative School and the Purveyor of the Benedita Holy Almshouse.
