Benedict XVI in Belém
The President of the Republic and Mrs. Cavaco Silva received the visit of Pope Benedict XVI in the Palace of Belém, where he held a private meeting with the Portuguese Head of State.
After the Portuguese retinue and that of the Vatican were presented, the Pope held a brief encounter with the family of the President of the Republic, and then went to the veranda of the Palace from which he greeted the Presidential staff.
After the meeting with President Aníbal Cavaco Silva, Pope Benedict XVI left for the residence of the Apostolic Nuncio, his official abode during his visit to Lisbon.
