President of the Republic sent message to his counterpart in the People’s Republic of China on the 30th anniversary of the onset of diplomatic relations between both countries

The President of the Republic sent a message to his counterpart in the People’s Republic of China, Hu Jintao, on the 30th anniversary of the onset of diplomatic relations between both countries

Following is the text of President Cavaco Silva’s message:

"Mister President,

Portugal and China jointly commemorate the thirtieth anniversary of the onset of diplomatic relations between both countries. The last three decades saw the consolidation of a relation of friendship, respect and trust between our countries and their peoples.

Thirty years that marked the history of the two countries. The 1987 Joint Luso-Chinese Declaration, which I had the honour to subscribe on behalf of Portugal, allowed the peaceful transition of Macau, and determined the principles on which the operation of the Special Administrative Region is based, recognizing its own characteristics in the context of the Chinese nation. It is an exemplary success of which Portugal and China can be proud of, and which was fundamental for the climate of stability and economic development of Macau.

As an essence of this success, the Special Administrative Region of Macau, which also celebrates its 10th anniversary during the current year, accomplishes nowadays a role of primary importance in the relations between Portugal and China and in those of China with Portuguese speaking countries.

Endeavouring to strengthen all matters pursuant to their relationship, Portugal and China established a global strategic partnership in 2005, which has permitted both countries to mutually benefit from cooperating over a more than ever enlarged number of areas and from a frank and full dialogue covering the issues and challenges of our times.

The current world context emphasizes the interest and advantages of an improved cooperation between our two countries in all areas of common concern. I believe that the conditions exist to enable Portugal and China to face the future of their relationship with confidence and ambition. This is our wish, convinced that China will be an equally interested party determined to strengthen the bonds that link us both.

On this date which is so important for both our countries, I beg you, Mister President, to accept my warmest congratulations, and my sincere wishes for the progress and prosperity of the friendly people of China.

Aníbal Cavaco Silva"
