With regard to the award of the title of FIFA Player of the Year for 2008 to Cristiano Ronaldo, the President of the Republic sent a congratulatory message to the Portuguese football player.
Following is the text of the message:
"I wish to congratulate you for having been awarded the title of FIFA World Player of the Year for 2008, with which you were distinguished today.
In my own name and on behalf of all Portuguese, I am sending you the testimony of the joy with which we received the news of your election by the international football organization, thus placing your name in a restricted gallery of outstanding players.
The high level of sports activity which you have shown and the firm endeavour you have placed in your path as a football player, which have already deserved several prizes, now justifies the nomination for the title which tops your very relevant sports record.
This distinction equally helps the valuation of sports in Portugal and is a strong incentive to young Portuguese athletes, at the same time as it contributes towards the international image of our Country.
Please accept my congratulations and best wishes for your personal and sports activities.
