Military Ceremony
The President of the Republic took part, in Setúbal, in the military ceremony commemorating the National Day of Portugal, Camões and the Portuguese Communities, where he addressed a speech to the Portuguese military community.
President Cavaco Silva arrived at the site of the ceremony, in Avenida Jaime Rebelo on board a Navy inspection launch. Several thousand members of the three branches of the Armed Forces were on parade and rendered military honours to their Supreme Commander.
Training-ship "Sagres" and frigate "Vasco da Gama" were anchored in the River Sado, in the area where the ceremonies were held, which was over flown by F-16 aircraft.
The military ceremony ended with a march past of the forces on parade, including numerous mechanized armour.
