On behalf of the people of Portugal and in my own personal name, I address sincere condolences to the family of António Matias, whose early decease was a great shock to all.
Throughout his long career in Judo, first as an athlete and later as manager of the national team, António Matias earned the regard and respect of all Portuguese as a result of excellent achievements.
In this moment of mourning, I wish to pay tribute to a man who dedicated his life to Portuguese sports and brought worldwide dignity to the name of his Country.
