I was deeply moved when being advised of the tragic attempt that victimized Mrs. Benazir Bhutto and other defenceless persons. The search for national reconciliation and the consolidation of the democratic process will be the best answer that can be given to the performers of this heinous act.
It is my wish to congratulate the historian Irene Flunser Pimentel, who has been awarded the 2007 Pessoa Prize.

I was deeply shocked upon being told of the tragic attempts perpetrated today in Algiers against defenceless persons, which deserve our vigorous condemnation and rejection.
Upon being told of your victory in the Orange Bowl Junior International Tennis Tournament, held in Florida, I want to congratulate you for the splendid level of sportsmanship shown and for the extraordinary endeavour which has characterized your career as an athlete. It is a matter of pride for all the Portuguese that you are the second youngest ever tennis player to conquer the main stage of the competition.

On the occasion of the celebrations of the National Day of East Timor, I am particularly pleased to address Your Excellency, on behalf of the People of Portugal and in my own personal name, our warmest congratulations, as well as our best wishes for the progress and prosperity of our brethren the People of East Timor.
I am very pleased to congratulate the National Soccer Team for having reached the final stage of the European F.A. Cup which will be held in Austria and Switzerland in 2008. Both players and the technical team are to be congratulated for having believed in their possibilities until attaining yesterday’s result.
