Message from the President of the Republic Addressed to the President of the French Republic, Nicolas Sarkozy, on the occasion of The National Day of France

Mr. President and dear Friend

On the occasion of the National day of the French Republic, I am pleased to address you, on behalf of the people of Portugal and in my own personal name, our warmest congratulations and our very sincere wishes for the success and prosperity of the French people as well as yourself.

The bonds of friendship and cooperation which tie our two countries allow us face the future of our relationship with confidence and ambition. The same ambition that Portugal and France share with respect to a Europe which we wish more integrated, more equitable and better capable to answer the challenges of our time, as well as to project its image and actions on a global scale. I was very gratified with your presence at the dinner which I had the honour to host on the occasion of the first Summit between the European Union and Brazil, which further confirmed the feelings we share over the issue.

Renewing my congratulations please accept, Mr. President, the expression of my highest consideration and personal esteem.

Aníbal Cavaco Silva
