President of the Republic sent condolences to the Family of Professor Albino Aroso

The President of the Republic addressed a message of condolences to the Family of Professor Albino Aroso

Following is the text of the message sent by President Cavaco Silva:

“Upon receiving the news of the passing away of Professor Albino Aroso, I address the bereaved Family my very deepest condolences.

Throughout his life, Albino Aroso was a noted example of a humanistic physician, who dedicated his great knowledge and experience to the public cause, with an expressive and pioneering role in instituting family planning in our country.

In 2006 he was justly awarded the I National Health Prize, and was also considered, by the World Medical Association, as one of the 65 physicians that were most dedicated to worldwide public causes.

Albino Aroso provided a decisive contribution to the fight against infant mortality, an area where Portugal made extraordinary progress in a few decades, showing nowadays one of the most reduced rates in infant mortality in the whole of Western Europe. Many thousands of children survived due to the actions and drive of Albino Aroso.

We must honour his memory and follow his example of life.

Aníbal Cavaco Silva”
