The President of the Republic addressed a message to the new King of The Netherlands, William Alexander
Following is the text of the message from President Cavaco Silva:
“Majesty
On the joyous occasion of Your Majesty’s investiture as King of the Netherlands, I wish to convey, on behalf of the Portuguese People and on my own behalf, our heartfelt wishes of happiness for the reign you are about to begin. I share the jubilation of the Dutch People and would like to address our sincere best wishes of hope at this important moment of generational renewal which, undoubtedly, will constitute a reference point in the history of the Netherlands.
On this occasion, I wish to reiterate to Your Majesty the great importance that Portugal and I, personally, attach to the strengthening of the historical ties and of the friendship existing between Portugal and the Netherlands, both at bilateral level and within the framework of the European Union.
Thus, it is with a particular satisfaction that I have the honour to address to Your Majesty an invitation to pay a State Visit to Portugal, at a date to be agreed through diplomatic channels.
Renewing my most sincere wishes for health and happiness, please accept, Your Majesty, the assurances of my highest consideration and esteem.
Aníbal Cavaco Silva"
