The President of the Republic addressed a message of congratulations to the President elect of the Federal Republic of Germany, Joachim Gauck.
Following is the text of the message sent by President Aníbal Cavaco Silva:
“Mister President,
Upon receiving the news of Your Excellency’s election as President of the Federal Republic of Germany, I beg you to accept, on behalf of the People of Portugal and in my own personal name, our warmest congratulations and best wishes for your success in the exercise of the great responsibilities for which you have been called upon.
I am certain that, during Your Excellency’s mandate, the bonds of friendship and cooperation that link our two countries will find new opportunities to be deepened and developed, both bilaterally and within the framework of the European Union, with the inherent advantage of the inestimable contribution of the numerous Portuguese and Portuguese descendant community that live and exercise their professions in Germany. Your Excellency may count upon my personal endeavour in that sense, convinced that a closer partnership between Portugal and Germany is fully in the best interests of both our peoples and countries.
Renewing my warmest congratulations, I beg Your Excellency to accept my best wishes for your personal well being and for the growing progress of the People of Germany.
Aníbal Cavaco Silva”
