On the occasion of the birth of Infanta D. Sofia, the President of the Republic sent congratulatory messages to the Princes of Asturias and to the Sovereign Heads of Spain.
Text of the message of President Cavaco Silva to the Princes of Asturias:
“Your Royal Highnesses,
The news of the birth of Your Highnesses’ second daughter, Infanta D. Sofia, was for me a matter of great gladness and emotion.
In this hour of joy, I address Your Highnesses and to their Majesties the Sovereign Heads of Spain, her Grandparents, on behalf of the People of Portugal, and in my Wife’s and my own name, our very best wishes for the happiness and good health of the fortunate child.
I remember with great pleasure the privilege of the happy moment when Your Highnesses and Their Majesties shared with my Wife and I such important news for all the Royal Family and the People of Spain, and which so especially marked my state Visit to Spain last September.
Renewing our most sincere wishes, I request Your Highnesses accept the expression of my highest consideration and personal esteem.

“Your Majesty, Dear Friend,
I was extremely pleased to receive the joyous news of the birth of H.R.H. Infanta D. Sofia, Your Majesty’s granddaughter.
In this hour of happiness, I have special pleasure in addressing Your Majesty, Her Majesty Queen Sofia, as well as all the Royal Family, Their Highnesses the Princes of Asturias, on behalf of the People of Portugal, and in my Wife’s name and my own, our most sincere and warm congratulations, as well as our best wishes for the good health of the happy child.
The very happy moment when Your Majesties and Their Royal Highnesses the Princes of Asturias shared with us the joyous news of such an important happening for all the Royal Family and People of Spain, on the occasion of my State Visit last September, was for us a great privilege and a very special honor.
Renewing my wishes for your happiness, I would request Your Majesty to accept the expression of my highest esteem and personal consideration.
