The President of the Republic addressed a congratulatory message to the United Nations Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon, upon his re-election.
Following is the text of the message addressed by President Aníbal Cavaco Silva:
"Upon the occasion of Your Excellency’s being re-elected as Secretary General of the United Nations, I want to address you, on behalf of Portugal and in my own personal name, our warmest congratulations and sincere wishes for your continued success in the leadership of the United Nations.
During Your Excellency’s first mandate, the United Nations were called upon to face very demanding and complex challenges such as responses to natural disasters, the world food crisis, regional conflicts, the promotion of a more balanced economic and human development, as well as proceeding with its own administrative reform. You Excellency’s re-election is the guarantee that the United Nations will continue to have an irreplaceable role in the effective response to all the challenges that the world is currently facing.
During the current mandate in the Security Council, and even further on, I want to assure you that you will always find in Portugal an ally that is firmly committed to the values of the United Nations Charter, determined to protect Human Rights and to strengthening the role of the United Nations System in the promotion of peace, security and a fairer and more balanced international order.
Reaffirming my congratulations, I beg you to accept, Mister Secretary General, my best wishes for your personal well being and for the best success in your second mandate.
Aníbal Cavaco Silva”
