The President of the Republic addressed a congratulatory message to the President of the European Commission, José Manuel Durão Barroso,
on the occasion of his re-election.

Following is the text of the message:

"Mister President of the European Commission and dear Friend

On being advised of the very expressive vote in the European Parliament which gave rise to Your Excellency’s re-election as President of the European Commission, I beg you to accept, on behalf of the People of Portugal and in my own personal name, my heartiest congratulations and my wishes for your success in the new mandate with which you have been entrusted.

In a time of important and difficult challenges which bring into greater evidence the advantages of the process of European integration, the resolution which Your Excellency has shown at the head of the European Commission, which is aptly recognized in this re-election, is a guarantee of the endeavour required to answer the legitimate expectations and wishes of European citizens.

Renewing my warmest congratulations, I beg Your Excellency to accept the expression of my highest regard and personal esteem.

Aníbal Cavaco Silva"
