Message of condolences from the President of the Republic addressed to the President of the Republic of Cyprus, due to the passing away of former President Tassos Papadopoulos

The President of the Republic addressed a message of condolences to the President of the Republic of Cyprus, with respect to the passing way of former President Tassos Papadopoulos.

Following is the text of the message:

"Mister President

I was very distressed to learn of the passing away of the former President of Cyprus, Tassos Papadopoulos.

In this hour of mourning, I wish to address Your Excellency and to all the people of Cyprus, on behalf of the people of Portugal and in my own personal name, our sincere condolences, requesting that you equally transmit to the grieving family our deepest regrets.

Tassos Papadopoulos will be recalled by all as a politician of causes who, throughout more than five decades of total dedication to the public cause of Cyprus, fought untiringly for the development of his country. Under his Presidency Cyprus adhered to the European Union, in 2004, as a fully fledged member and, in 2007, to the European Monetary Union, where he had been performing a role of great relevance in the assertion of the European project.

Aníbal Cavaco Silva"
