The President of the Republic sent the following congratulatory message to the film director Manoel de Oliveira, who was awarded the Palme d’Or Honour of the Cannes Film Festival:
"In my own personal name and on behalf of all Portuguese, I wish to congratulate you for the distinction you received in the Cannes Film Festival. The Palme d’Or Honour with which you were awarded, is the recognition of a route in the art of film making that, in itself, would deserve being made into a film.
Portuguese cinema is an integral part of the name of Manoel de Oliveira. And, for the same reason, is deserving of all our regard. The applause you received in Cannes is enhanced by that of all the Portuguese who know, enjoy and appreciate your work.
Please accept, once again, my congratulations and sincere wishes for your personal welfare and continued success in your filming activities.
