On behalf of the people of Portugal and in my own personal name, I address my deeply felt condolences to the family of Fernanda Botelho.
One of the more original voices of 20th century Portuguese literature disappears with the passing away of Fernanda Botelho. Her work interprets, as few others do, the sensitivity of a generation marked by the social and cultural changes of post war Europe.
It is thus very appropriate that, in this hour of mourning, I should pay my tribute to an authoress who deserves the respect of all who accompanied her passage through her writings.
