The President of the Republic was accompanied by the Minister of National Defence and by the Chief of the Armed Forces General Staff in his visit to this unit, incorporated in the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).
Meeting in Beirut airport
In a stop-over on his visit to the National Detached Force in the Lebanon, the President of the Republic was welcomed, in Beirut airport, by the Lebanese Prime Minister, Fouad Siniora, with whom he had a meeting.
Meeting in Nicosia
The President of the Republic held a meeting, in Nicosia, with the President of Cyprus, Tassos Nikolaou Papadopoulos, during a stop-over on his way to Jordan for a two day official visit.
The President of the Republic and Mrs. Cavaco Silva are travelling to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan o February 17 and 18, at the invitation of His Majesty King Abdullah II Ibn Al Hussein, the first official visit of a Portuguese Head of State to that Country.

The President of the Republic was awarded the Gold Medal of the Spanish city of León, at a ceremony held in the San Marcelo Consistory, the former Ayuntamiento (headquarters of the City Council).
The President of the Republic and Mrs. Cavaco Silva held a private meeting, in León, with the Princes of Asturias, who invited them to lunch at a restaurant in that Spanish city.
The President of the Republic was conferred with a Degree Honoris Causa by the University of León, in Spain, during a ceremony held in the City Auditorium with the presence of the Princes of Asturias.
