The Presidents of Portugal and Brazil, Aníbal Cavaco Silva and Luís Inácio Lula da Silva, met in Rio de Janeiro, on the occasion of the State Visit of the Portuguese Head of State to Brazil.
Meeting with César Maia
The President of the Republic and Mrs. Cavaco Silva received, in the Palace of São Clemente, the Mayor of the City of Rio de Janeiro, César Maia, and the Brazilian Commemorations Committee for the celebration of the 200th Anniversary of the Arrival of the Portuguese Court in Brazil.

On the occasion of his visit to Brazil, to attend the commemorations of the 200th anniversary of the arrival of the Portuguese Court in Rio de Janeiro, the President of the Republic and Mrs. Cavaco Silva met with members of their cultural retinue together with several Brazilian intellectuals and artists during lunch in Confeitaria Colombo, an emblematic café and restaurant in the city centre.
Ceremony held in the HGIB
On the second day of his visit to Brazil, the President of the Republic was awarded the office of Honorary President of the Historical and Geographical Institute of Brazil, of Rio de Janeiro, during an event where he received the Collar corresponding to the decoration.
The President of the Republic and Mrs. Cavaco Silva attended, in the Rio de Janeiro Municipal Theatre, a concert by Teresa Salgueiro, accompanied by the João Cristal Septet.
Chegada ao Rio de Janeiro
The President of the Republic and Mrs. Cavaco Silva arrived in Rio de Janeiro for a visit to Brazil, on the occasion of the celebration of the 200th anniversary of the arrival of the Portuguese Court.
During his coming visit to Brazil, at the invitation of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, His Excellency the President of the Republic decided to honour the following individualities, in recognition for their contribution towards the strengthening of the relations between Portugal and Brazil, through the promotion and organization of the commemorations of the Bicentenary of the Arrival of the Portuguese Court:
Standing Committee in Belem
The President of the Republic received the Standing Committee of the Council of the Portuguese Communities.
At the invitation of the President of the Republic, Their Majesties King Harald and Queen Sonia of Norway will undertake a State Visit to Portugal, from 27 to 29 May.
The President of the Republic and Mrs. Cavaco Silva will pay a State Visit to Mozambique, from 24 to 26 March 2008, at the invitation of the President of the Republic of Mozambique, Armando Emílio Guebuza. This will be the first State Visit of the President of the Republic to an African country of Portuguese antecedence.
