President Cavaco Silva attended the ceremony of the award of the 2007 Pessoa Prize to the researcher Irene Pimentel, which was held in the Military Museum, in Lisbon.
Clinical software company in Porto
The President of the Republic officially opened the new facilities of “ALERT”, in Vila Nova de Gaia. Founded in 1999, this company is dedicated to the development, distribution and implementation of clinical software, aiming to create paperless clinical environments. This company was awarded the 2007 COTEC Innovation Prize.
Visit to companies headquartered in the new building
Cavaco Silva officially opened the new building of PROMONET – headquarters of NET (New Enterprises and Technologies), installed in the Porto technology nucleus, in Ramalde, where a centre for company incubation is also available.
Lunch in Porto
During the Route to Science, the President of the Republic met, in a discussion lunch, held in the Porto University Circle, a group of researchers and entrepreneurs of the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector.
President tested innovations
In the Porto Graduate Institute of Engineering (ISEP), integrated in the Porto Polytechnic Institute, President Cavaco Silva assisted at a presentation of R&D and entrepreneurial innovation activities of this establishment, after which he visited the Research Centre on Reliable Systems and Real Time (CISTER), the Research Group in Knowledge Engineering and Decision Support (GECAD) and the Laboratory of Autonomous Systems (LSA).
Visit to Primavera Software
The second day of the 4th Campaign of the Route to Science began with a visit of the President of the Republic to Primavera Software, a company headquartered in Braga and considered as national leader in entrepreneurial management applications, which are installed in more than 40,000 companies spread over Portugal, Spain, Angola, Mozambique and Cape Verde.
President inaugurates RAPID system
The President of the Republic assisted, in Pedras Rubras Airport, in Porto, to the debut of a new Border Control electronic system, known as RAPID – Automatic Recognition of Documented Passengers, conceived by the Immigration and Border Control Authority (SEF), and produced by the company known as Vision-Box. This is the first system in the world that permits the automatic control of passengers holding solely their electronic passports.
Presentation of cooperation projects
In the visit made to the Lisbon Graduate Institute of Engineering (ISEL), a school known for its strong links with industry, the President of the Republic was given information concerning two innovative projects under way, one contributing to the development of equipment and subsystems of the ATM network and the other regarding the development of a new generation of technologies for the Via Verde (Automatic Motorway Toll).
Interviewed by students in the Virtual Studio
The President of the Republic included the Graduate School of Journalism, an establishment integrated in the Lisbon Polytechnic Institute, in another campaign of the Route to Science. Equipped with an analogical and a digital television studio, two radio studios and one journalism newsroom, the School also has available several multimedia development classrooms for various platforms, from television to mobile phones.
Centre for Operational Coordination
President Cavaco Silva visited BRISA’s centre of entrepreneurial activity, in S. Domingos de Rana, where he was shown the diverse systems used in the operation and management of the motorway network, with recourse to means derived from Research and Development (R&D), both internally developed and in cooperation with external partners.
