October 5 celebrated in Belém
The President of the Republic was present at the Ceremony of the Solemn Changing of the Guard, took part in the launching of an issue of stamps with the topic “Symbols of the Republic” and watched some of the musical performances in the Palace of Belém, events which were included in the programme of the celebrations of the Day of the Founding of the Republic.
In the presence of several thousands of people who watched the military honours rendered outside the Palace of Belém and later were shown its gardens and some of its halls and reception rooms, President Cavaco Silva spoke with some of the visitors to the exhibitions of Portuguese sculpture – “Open Garden” – and jewellery articles created for the “Jewellery and National Symbols” competition, on show to the public until November 25.
Several musical pieces were performed for the visitors to the official residence of the Presidency of the Republic, by the Air Force Band, groups and singers, that interpreted several musical styles.
Together with his family, the President toured the grounds of the Palace and greeted the artists which performed on the stage erected in the recently refurbished “Pátio dos Bichos”.
