Monastery of Santa Maria de Cárquere
The President of the Republic journeyed to several symbolic features of interest in the region known as the Romanic Route, in Resende County.
The first stage of the visit led President Cavaco Silva to the Monastery of Santa Maria de Cárquere, where he viewed the ancient monumental architecture, the still exiting frescoes on the walls and a miniature sculpture, in ivory, of the church’s Patron Saint.
Already in Resende, the President visited the Municipal museum, where he viewed an exhibition relating to the Romanic traces existing in the region.
Finally, in the church of the former County town of Santa Maria de Mouros, and after having listened to a lecture on the origins and the evolution of the temple, the President of the Republic delivered an address in a ceremony celebrating the visit to the County and to the Romanic Route.
