Homage in the Coach Museum
The President of the Republic presided at a Homage Ceremony to National Sports, which he promoted, with the participation of athletes, leaders and technicians of all the diverse sports activities, as well as representatives from the sports federations and other sports leading bodies, during which several Olympic and Paralympic athletes were decorated.
Also attending were representatives of committees, confederations, associations, leagues and mustering and promotional bodies of sports activities in Portugal, as well as of Higher Education Sports institutions.
The ceremony, held in the former building of the Coach Museum, began with a film produced by the Portuguese Olympic and Paralympic Committees, which was followed by addresses by the Presidents of both committees, respectively José Manuel Constantino and Humberto Santos, and by testimonies of two athletes, João Neto and Nelson Lopes.
On the occasion, President Cavaco Silva addressed a speech.
Following this, the President decorated the athletes which stood out in several Olympic and Paralympic sports. All decorated athletes were awarded the Order of Prince Henry the Navigator, the Grand Cross to Nelson Évora, and the grade of Grand Officer to Carlos Lopes, Emanuel Silva, Fernando Pimenta, Francis Obikwelu, José Manuel Gentil Quina, Mário Gentil Quina and Vanessa de Sousa Fernandes.
The grade of Commander in the same Order was awarded to Francisco Rebelo de Andrade, Hugo Passos, Nuno Miguel Delgado, Olga Pinto, Paulo Coelho, Rui Costa and Rui Silva.
The Portuguese Olympic and Paralympic Committees were awarded the title of Honorary Members of the Order of Prince Henry the Navigator.
