Champalimaud Foundation
The President of the Republic opened, in Lisbon, the international conference “Portugal and its Youth” which, comprised in the Routes to the Future Campaign, launched a debate on the new generation of the Portuguese that shows, in a society which stands out due to deep structural changes, and where they are also outstanding players, the new trends they are instrumental in building.
Held in the Champalimaud Foundation, and after speeches addressed by the Chairman of the Institution, Leonor Beleza, by the Commissioner of the Routes to the Future Conferences, João Lobo Antunes, and by the President of the Republic, the meeting continued with the discussion panel “Values and expectations of a better qualified generation”, during which the results of the study-inquiry carried out in 2015 on Portuguese Youth were presented.
The study, entitled “Employment, Mobility, Politics and Leisure: situations and attitudes of Portuguese Youth in a comparative perspective”, was presented by two of its six authors, Marina Costa Lobo and Vítor Sérgio Pereira, researchers in the Institute of Social Sciences of Lisbon University, to the discussion panel presided by Carlos Azevedo, Chairman of ESLIDER, Portugal.
In the second discussion panel of the Conference, “Youth and Employment”, presided by Joana Branco Lopes, from the National Youth Council, addresses were delivered by Miguel Pina Martins, a partner in the Science4You enterprise, who presented his personal testimony, Mário Centeno, Consultant to the Bank of Portugal, and Jacqueline O’Reilly, Manager of CROME-Research Centre on Management and Employment and Deputy Chancellor of Brighton University, in the United Kingdom.
To conclude the first day of the Conference, the “Youth and Citizenry” discussion panel was held, presided by Francisco Maria Balsemão, Chairman of the Foundation for Youth, during which a testimony was presented by Miguel Pavão, a dental therapist founder of NGO “Smiling World”, with addresses delivered by Filipe Santos, Chairman of the Portugal Social Innovation initiative, and by Anna Horvath, consultant on Social Sciences in the European Agency for Education, Audiovisual and Culture.
