The data base “Addresses by Presidents of the Republic”, set up with the objective to bring together and provide access to the speeches of the Portuguese Heads of State since the Republic was proclaimed, will be available online as from 5 December instant.
Made available in the official site of the Presidency of the Republic, the data base provides references and access to the full texts of approximately 5000 addresses - namely speeches, declarations, communiqués, messages and interviews – and is developed and continuously updated, within the scope of the activity of the Document Services and Records Department of the General Secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic.
Currently covering exhaustively the post 25 April period, this repository thus brings together the addresses of Presidents António de Spínola, Francisco Costa Gomes, António Ramalho Eanes, Mário Soares and Jorge Sampaio, as well as those delivered by President Aníbal Cavaco Silva until now. On the other hand it already includes more five hundred addresses by the eight Heads of State of the 1st Republic and of the “Estado Novo”.
This anthology is highly relevant in political and historical terms, an important cultural and civic contribution, and simultaneously a source of information at the service of the people, including the Diaspora Portuguese, as well as an useful tool for the national academic community and for researchers from other countries, mainly in the areas of Political Science and Portuguese Contemporary History.
The data base will be accessible in the site of the Presidency of the Republic, through the link “Library of the Presidency of the Republic”, viewable in the main page, in the “Links” area, or directly in www.biblioteca.presidencia.pt.
