The President of the Republic answered affirmatively the request from the President of the Republic of Mozambique asking for the deployment of military observers to monitor the cease-fire in that Country.
Following is the transcript of the announcement of this decision:
“Within the framework of the current negotiations between Renamo and the Mozambique Government for the termination of military hostilities, the President of the Republic of Mozambique addressed a letter to the the President of the Republic in which he requested that Portugal deploy two officers to comprise the team of international observers which is being set up to monitor the cease fire that has meanwhile been agreed.
The President of the Republic, in close collaboration with the Government decided to affirmatively answer the request of the President of the Republic of Mozambique, which was relayed today to the Mozambican authorities.
This decision was taken with the conviction that this agreement, based on a political commitment whose importance merits full support, which meets the legitimate ambitions of the people of Mozambique and is a fundamental basis for the deepening of the ongoing democratic process in the Country, and for the development and progress of Mozambique”.
