Meeting of SCND
The Supreme Council for National Defence held an ordinary meeting chaired by the President of the Republic.
At the end of the meeting, held in the Palace of Belém, the following notice was published, the text of which is as follows:
“The Supreme Council for National Defence held an ordinary meeting and, within the scope of its consultative competence, analysed and debated the Government’s proposals on the deployment of Military Forces in missions abroad. The Council pronounced itself in agreement with the following new missions:
1. Afghanistan: since the mission of the International Security Assistance Force should be finalized at the end of this year and become a Support Mission, national participation will then be reduced to 10 military personnel, who will exercise staff functions in the General Headquarters of the Allied Forces.
2. Mali: participation of one C-130 aircraft and respective Support Detachment to operate for three months on behalf of UNO peace maintenance missions in the region.
The Council discussed issues that NATO intends to develop within the framework of the situation resulting from the occurrences in the Ukraine, and was advised as to the possibility of the national participation of a maritime patrol aircraft over the Baltic Sea.
Within the scope of its administrative competences, the Council analysed the proposals submitted by the Minister of National Defence, and confirmed the Strategic Military Concept and approved the Missions of the Armed Forces and its Forces Systems. These documents are the update of the prior documents, in force since 2004”.
