Horticultural products undertaking
At the beginning of a journey dedicated to farming by the new generations, the President of the Republic visited two agricultural undertakings and met with 60 young farmers from the region of the Algarve.
President Cavaco Silva started with a visit in Patacão, near Faro, to a horticultural undertaking, comprising a large sized hothouse for the hydroponic production of tomato with the use of bees for pollination, managed by young farmer Márcio Alexandre.
Later, in the grounds belonging to a young farmer who, in the Faro neighbourhood, has a large persimmon orchard, the President visited the storage facilities of the Luis Sabbo, Frutas do Algarve Company, where he was shown the process of growing those and other types of fruit.
In the same site, an enlarged meeting was held with 60 young farmers from the Algarve region, where the Minister of Agriculture and the Sea, Assunção Cristas, was also present. Several young farmers took part in the debate, which was closed by the President of the Republic.
This was followed by a working lunch, in which representatives of Algarve agricultural associations, of the Association of Young Farmers of Portugal (AJAP), local authorities and officers responsible for regional bodies also took part.
