he President of the Republic will be the guest speaker at the closure of the World Ocean Summit 2014, which will be held in San Francisco, USA, between 24 and 26 February instant.

The topic of this summit - World Ocean Summit – will be Sustainability and Governance of the Oceans, and will be attended by Heads of State, members of Governments, officers from United Nations, European Community and NGO agencies, as well as entrepreneurial leaders. President Cavaco Silva will deliver the closing speech, on 26 February.

The President will be accompanied in this Summit by the Minister for Agriculture and the Sea, Assunção Cristas, by the Director of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Teresa Patrício Gouveia, by the Director of AICEP (Portuguese Investment Agency), Pedro Pessoa e Costa and by the Chairman of the Sines Port Authority, João Franco.

On 25 February, the date of his arrival in the United States, the President of the Republic will meet a group of Young Portuguese working in the areas of Technology and Innovation, residing in the San Francisco Bay region.

On the following day he will hold a meeting with the Governor of the State of California and meet a group of North American entrepreneurs and investors, as well as with Portuguese local managerial staff and members of the Council of the Portuguese Diaspora.

The President will depart from San Francisco for Toronto, Canada, on 27 February, where he will be joined by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Rui Machete.

On the following day, the President will hold meetings with the Prime Minister of Ontario and with the Governor of the Province, after having met with Canadian investors. Later, he will attend the closure of a Luso-Canadian Economic Seminar.

The President’s agenda also includes meetings with members of the Canadian Federal Government.

Also on 28 February the President of the Republic will have an Encounter with the Portuguese Community in Canada and attend a concert with performances by “fado” singer António Zambujo and the Luso-Canadian artist Nelly Furtado.

On 1 March, the last day of the visit, he will meet with members of the Luso-Canadian Federation of Managers and Entrepreneurs, and visit the Luso-Canadian Charitable Society of Toronto, an institution dedicated to the aid of handicapped persons.

In the contacts with the Portuguese and Luso-Descendant Community of Canada, the President of the Republic will be joined by the President of the Azores Regional Government, Vasco Cordeiro, and by the Members of Parliament elected by the Non-European Electoral Circle, Maria João Ávila and Carlos Páscoa Gonçalves.
