Meeting of the SCND
The Supreme Council for National Defence held an ordinary meeting, presided by the President of the Republic.
A Communiqué was made public at the end of the meeting, held in the Palace of Belém.
Following is the text of the Communiqué:
“The Council was advised concerning the situation of the National Armed Forces currently carrying out external peace missions, after which it analysed and gave a favourable view to the Government’s proposal on the missions to be deployed during 2013.
In general, the current deployment of our Forces will be kept going, with some changes, particularly in Afghanistan, depending upon the development of the finalization of the mission of the International Security Assistance Force, estimated for the end of next year.
Added to this should be the deployment of seven members of the Forces, to be included in the European Union Training Mission in the Mali Republic, for an estimated period of one and a half years.
A reduction of the forces to be deployed should result from the consideration of all the missions in question.
It will be our Country’s duty, once again, and through the means of our Navy, to assume the command, over four months, of the operation ATALANTA, that the European Union carries out to guarantee the security of maritime traffic in the Indian Ocean.
