The Presidency of the Republic publishes the following communiqué:
1. Several organs of the media have recently reported that the monthly lifetime subsidy of holders of political office was created during the governments headed by Prof. Doctor Aníbal Cavaco Silva as Prime Minister.
2. Since the referred subsidy was instituted through Law No. 4/85, dated 9 April (Charter of the Holders of Public Office) – and Prof. Doctor Aníbal Cavaco Silva took office as Prime Minister for the first time on 6 November 1985 - such reports are obviously untrue.
