Commando Troop Centre
The President of the Republic presided at the commemorative ceremony of the 50th anniversary of the Commando Troops and to the Day of the Commando Troop Centre (CTC).
With the presence of the Minister for National Defence and of the Chiefs of the Armed Forces General Staff and of the Army General Staff, President Cavaco Silva took part in the various military ceremonies, and decorated with the War Cross – 1st Class - several Commando Units that had achieved distinction in campaign and then delivered a speech, where he underlined the valorous acts of bravery and courage in the service of the Fatherland, and in defence of the values of freedom and democracy.
He emphasized the outstanding performance of the Commando troops in the operational theatres of Angola, Mozambique and Guinea, whose actions and determination have continued in peace support missions and in such actions within the scope of Technical and Military Cooperation.
The Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces referred that the maintenance of this level of performance is the result of strict training and of an unique identity, based upon discipline and firm codes of conduct, where the human resource is considered the most precise component.
Recognizing the value of the work developed by the Commandos’ Association in supporting its members, the President of the Republic emphasized the crucial role carried out by the C0mmando Troop Centre in the training of Commandos and in preserving the values and traditions of these Special Forces.
After the military march past, the President unveiled a commemorative plaque allusive to the 50th anniversary of the Commandos and signed the CTC’s Visitor’s Book of Honour.
