Canberra Memorial
In the first round of his Official Visit to Australia, the President of the Republic went to the Australian War Memorial, in Canberra, where he laid a wreath on the monument to the Australian soldiers’ victims of the main world conflicts.
Later, President and Mrs. Cavaco Silva visited the National Arboretum, where they planted a cork-oak in an area which had recently suffered a fire and was being reforested. The cork-oak was chosen due to the symbolism of its association with cork, one of the most internationally known Portuguese products.
The Minister of Education of the Territory of Australia’s Capital City, Chris Bourke, welcomed the presidential couple and helped in the tree planting ceremony.
