Welcoming Cavaco Silva
At the start of his State Visit to East Timor, the President of the Republic held a meeting with the new Timorese President, Taur Matan Ruak, following upon the welcoming ceremony with military honours, which took place in the presidential palace.
After the meeting between the retinues, the two Presidents witnessed the subscription of the agreements concluded between the Foreign Ministers of both countries, respectively Paulo Portas and Zacarias da Costa. These comprised a protocol aiming towards the training of Timorese diplomats and a memorandum of understanding covering cooperation in the area of delimitation and demarcation of maritime areas.
Later, President Taur Matan Ruak and his Wife, Mrs. Isabel Ferreira, hosted a banquet in the honour of President and Mrs. Cavaco Silva, held in the Presidential Palace.
The President of the Republic delivered a speech at the beginning of the banquet, after having decorated the Timorese President with the Grand Collar of the Order of Prince Henry the Navigator and having been awarded the Grand Collar of the Order of East Timor.
